The Nigeria Police Academy (NPA) is a globally Acknowledged Nigerian university, owned and managed by the Nigerian federal government. The Nigeria Police Academy is located in Wudil, Kano State, Nigeria. The Nigeria Police Academy offers various undergraduate courses/programs.

The origin of the Nigeria Police Academy dates back to the early 80s when the Government of Nigeria in 1981 requested the British Government to make available to Nigeria, some united Kingdom Police officers to assess the training needs of the Nigeria Police.

In response to this request, a team of three British Police officers led by M.A. H Pacy ( Assistant Chief Constable, Humberside Police) was sent to Nigeria by the British Government. The team submitted its report known as the pacy report in 1982. This report was formally published as the white paper of the Federal Republic, of Nigeria, on the future training needs of the Nigeria Police Force. A follow up of recommendations of the pacy report led to the search for the best training orientation for the Nigeria Police.

In 1986, the then Inspector General of Police Alhaji Mohammed A. Gambo rtd, sent a delegation of three Nigeria Police officers led by late S.Z. Daura (Assistant Inspector General) to Egypt to understudy the Egyptian Police Academy. The report and recommendations of these two teams of experts had far-reaching effects in laying the foundation for the establishment of the Nigeria Police Academy, kano to serve as an institution for high-level manpower development, with a mission to train police officers to acquire the highest standards of professionalism.

The Academy officially took off simultaneously in 1988 at two temporary campuses; the Police training school Challawa, Kano where cadet Inspectors were trained; and the Police college Kaduna, where cadet ASPs were trained.

The two campuses were merged and relocated to its permanent site in Wudil, Kano, after it was formerly Commissioned on the 2nd April 1996, by then Head of State and Commander in Chief of the Armed forces, General Sani Abacha, GCON, DSS, MNI., with the expectation that the Academy will be affiliated to a University for degree awarding courses.

In the year 2012, the Federal Government of Nigeria upgraded the Nigeria Police Academy Wudil- Kano State, to a degree-awarding institution.

The Nigeria Police Academy courses are fully accredited and recognized by the National University Commission (NUC), a body overseeing all tertiary institutions (Universities) in Nigeria.

The aim of university academic programs is to provide a solid and broad university foundation to base future intellectual and professional activities at the undergraduate level. Nigeria Police Academy Admission Requirements

  • Interested applicants must have valid Nigerian citizenship and must be aged between 17 and 22 years at the time of application.
  • Male applicants must be at least 167 centimetres (5 feet 6 inches) tall, while females must be 162 centimetres (5 Feet 4 Inches) tall.
  • Male applicants must also have an expanded chest size not less than 34 inches for those aged between 21 and 22.
  • All candidates must be free from any mental or physical disability.
  • Applicants must have at least six (6) credits including mathematics, English, and subjects relevant to their course of choice on their Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination conducted by the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), National Examinations Council (NECO), or the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
  • All applicants must obtain satisfactory scores in an interview, written examination, psychological tests, and physical tests.
  • Applicants must score a minimum of at least 180 in UTME.
  • Applicants are advised to make the Nigeria Police Academy their first-choice institution when registering for the JAMB’s UTME
  • The Nigeria Police Academy will not accept SSCE certificates or result statements from the year 2016 and earlier. Admission into the academy is made on a quota basis in which each state gets 12 slots.
