Pharmacy Schools in California requirements
To qualify for the PharmD program in California, below are some of the academic requirements you must meet.
- Interested applicants must have acquired a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a reputable institution.
- Applicants are expected to have acquired a minimum of at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in all college work and pre-pharmacy required courses at an accredited two or four-year college (biochemistry must be taken at a four-year institution). Pre-pharmacy courses from vocational or technical schools are not accepted. More so, If you did not meet the required minimum GPA of 3.0 but demonstrate the ability to be successful in the program, you may still be considered for admission to some institutions.
- Applicants are expected to have completed all pre-pharmacy required courses with a minimum grade of C or higher at least one week before applying for the PharmD program.
- You are expected to repeat pre-pharmacy requirements in the following areas if they were taken more than 10 years before your application: biochemistry, human physiology, microbiology, and organic chemistry.
After Graduating from a Pharmacy School, What next?
Upon graduation, you wouldn’t go straight into practice as a pharmacist. You will need a license that will permit you to provide any pharmaceutical-related service. In California, you are required to pass both the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX), administered by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), and the Californian Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (CPJE), developed by the California State Board of Pharmacy (CSBP) to become a licensed pharmacist in California.
