YES. Although, IELTS is one of the prerequisite entry requirements to most Canadian universities but then, there are some Canadian universities that have waved this test with other alternative requirements for their prospective applicants. So in this article, we have collated a number of some Canadian universities you can apply to study without the IELTS requirement.

What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an international standardized mandatory assessment test of the English Language proficiency for non-native English Language speakers.

The IELTS is used to evaluate the English language proficiency of all prospective international students seeking to study in all native English-speaking countries. The IELTS often consists of four (4) assessment tests which include; Writing, Reading, listening, and speaking tests which is often graded on a scale of 0-9 within a duration of not less than three hours fifty-five minutes.

1. The University of Saskatchewan

The University of Saskatchewan is a Canadian public research university, The university is located on the east side of the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

The birth of the University of Saskatchewan can be traced to the year 1907 when an “Act to establish and incorporate a University for the Province of Saskatchewan” was passed by the provincial legislature. A provincial statute known as the University Act. It provided for a publicly funded, yet independent institution to be created for the citizens of the whole province.

5. Carleton University

Carleton University is a mid-sized comprehensive and research-intensive public university located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Carleton University was founded in 1942 as Carleton College, the institution originally operated as a private, non-denominational evening college to serve the returning World War II veterans. Carleton was chartered as a university by the provincial government in 1952 through The Carleton University Act, which was then amended in 1957, giving the institution its current name.

6. Okanagan College

Okanagan College is a public, post-secondary institution with over 120 certificates, diplomas, degrees and programs including apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship trades programs.

Okanagan College was first founded in 1963 as B. C. Vocational School, Okanagan College has since grown to be the largest college in British Columbia outside the Lower Mainland and Victoria with over 8,500 full-time students on four regional campuses and is the second-largest trade school in British Columbia.

Okanagan College Language requirements are program-specific and the alternative for IELTS is Duolingo scores.

7. Seneca College

Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology is a multiple-campus public college in the Greater Toronto Area, and Peterborough, Ontario, Canada regions. It offers full-time and part-time programs at the baccalaureate, diploma, certificate and graduate levels.

Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology opened in 1967 as part of a provincial initiative to establish an Ontario-wide network of colleges of applied arts and technology providing career-oriented diploma and certificate courses as well as continuing education programs to Ontario communities.

9. Brock University

Brock University is a public research university located in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. It is the only university in Canada in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, at the centre of Canada’s Niagara Peninsula on the Niagara Escarpment. The university is named after Maj.-General Sir Isaac Brock, who we are made to believe was responsible for defending Upper Canada against the United States during the War of 1812.

The University of Winnipeg is a provincially and privately funded post-secondary institution with undergraduate and a growing number of graduate programs. It was established in 1967

The university has a total undergraduate and graduate student population of about 11,213 spread across the seven (7) faculties and three (3) interdisciplinary colleges located on the campus.

The University of Winnipeg is one of the few universities you can apply to study in Canada without IELTS requirement, however, U of W has a number of alternatives to the IELTS which we have provided below;

  • The university has its own English Language Program (ELP) where applicants are required to complete the program with the prescribed score. This program is available in both full-time and part-time options for students to apply prior to their admission or commencement of the course.
